It is a flowering herb that is an early successional plant of clear-cuts, sandy fields, and right of ways. The leaves have a broad base that clasps the stem with edges that are generally wavy. Camphorweed grows to a height of 1-3 feet tall.

The seeds are spread by wind and animal. The seeds are fed on by song birds. It responds well to winter soil disturbance and burning.
