Christmas Fern

Christmas fern

Dryopteridaceae Polystichum acrostichoides

Native

Christmas fern occurs in the Eastern US and Canada. It grows in moist, shaded sites and is fond of ravines, rocky slopes and margins of standing water ways. It spreads via wind-blown spores and and rhizomes. Ruffed grouse depend on the fronds as a winter food source, and turkey sometimes feed on the fronds as well.
